Women can often appear innocent on the surface. And a few of them might genuinely be. Innocent, that is. However, most women have secrets, and some of them are quite substantial, if I may say so. They silently nurture raging passions that they have suppressed for years, as life has demanded they do so. They hide their true selves because they feel confined within a box, and their families would not be comfortable if they broke free from that box like a rose in full bloom.
Their thoughts may not always be innocent, such as: "Should I castrate my husband?" Women can smile and be gracious and kind, and most usually are. Gracious and kind, that is. But to assume that any woman is completely innocent would be utterly naïve.
Jeanne Stewart, for instance, has experienced a nervous breakdown in front of 834 advertising executives. Grief has finally caught up with her. Her mother has passed away, and her boyfriend has betrayed her. In retaliation, she used a condom, an exacto knife, a hot glue gun, and peanut oil. She was then arrested by police officers who found the situation so amusing that they had to stifle their laughter as Jeanne put on her own handcuffs.
Driving across the country to Oregon in her growling blue Bronco, Jeanne realizes that her life has collapsed. She decides to stay in the small town of Weltana, drawn by the delicious pancakes she enjoys at a local café and the kindness of the people.
Jeanne impulsively purchases a rambling, run-down house along the river, a dwelling that requires as much work as she does. She makes quirky new friends and discovers how far she is willing to go to protect them. Attending court-ordered anger management classes soon has her running naked along the river, covering her body in paint, and participating in a raucous bar fight.
Surprisingly, Jeanne does not expect to fall in love. "Last Time I Was Me" is a hilarious, emotionally-charged novel that will keep readers engrossed late into the night.
